Spring in the Black Forest in Germany

First time in Germany for the whole family except for me. We’re enjoying the nature and the landscape of the Black Forest close to Freiburg, where we rented a place to stay in a traditional farm estate.

Life on a farm is though but so rewarding! Kids play with the animals – there are cows, cats, dogs, pigs and goats – and we all get to drink fresh milk and eat homemade bread every day.

The forest is just waking up to Spring, and the green rich grass is dotted with wild violets, wood anemones, heal-alls, dame’s violets, primroses and dandelions. The soft sound of the creek just below our windows and the view from the same windows are hypnotising.

At around 1300m altitude the view from the Schauinsland is breathtaking and the kids loved the cable car ride to get there. The hiking paths take us to a 16th century farm, an abandoned silver mine 800m deep (that you can rent to celebrate your birthday, what a crazy idea!).

Freiburg is a lovely and quaint town with a great tram network and a lovely old cathedral. The market stalls around it are brim with mountain cheese and other local products. We bought some fantastic flowered ‘butterkäse’, the kids couldn’t get enough of it 🙂
